Equipped with five scientific instruments, Mangalayan will also attempt to map potential sources of methane gas that have been detected in the past on the red planet.

Considering all the failures of previous missions to get to Mars, or the atmosphere surrounding it, Indians would see getting there as a triumph regardless of what those instruments finally pick up.

While orbiting the red planet, its instruments ideally should begin picking up new information that might confirm whether there is now, or ever was water on Mars. Since American and Russian probes failed to come up with the answer, definitive word from Mangalayan would show that Indian scientists and engineers had succeeded where others had not.
